Striped Throw Blanket Crochet Pattern (2 Sizes)

A striped blanket is the project I recommend when someone says they want to make "a real blanket" and not just another baby square. The stitch is simple, the stripes make it look designed, and the repeat keeps you moving: finish one band, change color, feel productive.
The problem with most striped patterns is that they give you the stripe and not the plan. How many rows? What happens at the end? Is the border the same color as the start? This one answers all of that.
What is inside
A seven-page PDF in US terms. There is a Basics page with yarn estimates for each color, a Stripe Sequence page with a table you can print and tick off, the full pattern in two sizes, a two-round border, blocking, a stitch-count check and troubleshooting.
The lap blanket finishes at 36 x 48 inches before the border, the throw at 50 x 60 inches. You need medium (#4) soft washable yarn in three colors, a 6.0 mm hook (a half size larger than usual for a soft drape) and a tapestry needle. Gauge is 14 half double crochets and 10 rows equal 4 inches.
Three things from the pattern
- A stripe repeat you can memorize. 4 rows rose, 2 rows cream, 4 rows sage, 2 rows cream: 12 rows, repeated. The lap blanket uses 10 repeats for 120 rows. The throw uses 12 repeats plus 4 rows and 2 rows more, 150 in all.
- Counts that match the chain. Lap: chain 128, 126 half double crochets per row. Throw: chain 177, 175 per row. Every row ends with the same number, and the pattern says to check every 10 rows.
- A border with real numbers. Round 1 of single crochet is 496 stitches on the lap and 654 on the throw. Round 2 adds three stitches in each corner for 504 and 662, and the finished sizes come out about 38 x 50 and 52 x 62 inches.
Color changes that look clean
Change colors on the last yarn-over of the last stitch of the row before the new stripe. Carry the unused yarn up the edge. If your stripes look ragged at one edge, twist the old and new yarn once when you change. These tips are on the page next to the pattern, so you do not have to hunt for them.
For the border, the pattern suggests sage to frame the stripes, cream for a fresh look or rose for warmth. Try each skein against the edge before you commit. If you want a bigger blanket, add 7 chains for every extra 2 inches of width and 5 rows for every extra 2 inches of length.
