Moss Stitch Baby Blanket (Free Crochet Pattern)

Moss Stitch Baby Blanket (Free Crochet Pattern)

You found a pretty baby blanket pattern, you got three lines in, and then it said "*ch 1, sk next st, sc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * across" and you closed the tab. I have been there. Written patterns are a shorthand, and nobody teaches the shorthand, so beginners assume the problem is them. It is not. It is the missing translation.

I am Hannah, and I have been teaching friends and neighbors to crochet at my kitchen table for years. The moss stitch baby blanket is the pattern I hand to almost everyone first. It uses only two stitches you already know, the chain and the single crochet, and the little woven bumps it makes hide small tension mistakes beautifully. It is also the pattern I made a printable PDF of, with the translation built in.

What is inside the free PDF

It is nine pages. Page 3 is called How to Read a Crochet Pattern, and it decodes a real row from the blanket word by word: what the asterisks mean, why the number at the end of the row is your checkpoint, and how to read the repeat instruction without losing your place. Then comes a gauge swatch (chain 22, which takes about ten minutes), the row-by-row pattern, the border, blocking and washing notes, and a stitch-count check table so you can catch a mistake after one row instead of twenty.

The blanket finishes at about 32 x 36 inches with the border, worked in medium worsted yarn with a 5.0 mm hook. Cream and sage stripes are the look on the cover, and there is a one-color version if you would rather skip yarn changes.

Three things you will find on the pages

  • A stitch count on every row. Row 1 ends with 62 single crochets and 61 chain-1 spaces, 123 stitches in all. Row 2 works out to the same 123. If your number is off, the pattern tells you to stop and fix it right then.
  • A foolproof stripe plan. Six rows cream, six rows sage, repeated eleven times, then three more cream rows so both edges match. 135 rows in total, and you can tick them off on the page.
  • A "keep your edges straight" cheat sheet. The turning chain-2 on even rows counts as the first stitch, and on odd rows you work a real single crochet into the top of it. That one detail is where most wavy edges come from.

Make it your way

Want it bigger for a toddler bed? Chain 144 and the pattern tells you exactly how the repeats change. Smaller for a car seat? Chain 80 and work 95 rows. The yardage is a generous estimate, so buy one extra skein of each color and you will never run out mid-row.

When you finish, wash it cool, lay it flat, and block it to size. Moss stitch relaxes into the softest fabric after its first bath.
