Farmhouse Dishcloth Trio Crochet Pattern

Dishcloths are the best-kept secret in crochet. They use one skein of cotton, they teach you three different stitches in three evenings, and people actually use them, which is more than I can say for some of my early scarves. They also make the nicest hostess gift: stack three, tie them with twine, add a bar of soap, done.
The problem I kept running into was that every dishcloth pattern gave me one stitch, so I had a drawer full of the same cloth. This pattern gives you three different cloths that look good together: Farmhouse Ridge, Moss Check and Corner Weave.
What is inside
The PDF is eight pages in US terms. After a Basics page with materials and gauge, each cloth gets its own page with row-by-row instructions and a stitch count at every step. The last page covers washing, shrinkage, how to present the trio, a stitch-count table and troubleshooting.
You need medium (#4) 100 percent cotton, a 5.0 mm hook and about 70 yards per cloth, 210 for the set. Cotton does not stretch, so a gauge swatch is the one thing to do first: 16 single crochets and 18 rows equal 4 inches.
The three cloths
- Cloth 1, Farmhouse Ridge. Chain 33, then work single crochet in the back loop only. Every row makes a ridge that scrubs well. You will have 32 stitches in each of 36 rows, then a single crochet edge: 36 + 32 + 36 + 32 + 12 corner stitches is 148 in all.
- Cloth 2, Moss Check. Chain-1 spaces and single crochets alternate to make a woven look. Odd rows end with 16 single crochets and 15 spaces, 31 stitches, and the pattern gives you the rule for even rows too.
- Cloth 3, Corner Weave. This one is worked diagonally from one corner, increasing for 12 rows and then decreasing for 11. The block count is 78 + 66 = 144 blocks, a 12 by 12 square, and the pattern shows you how to check it.
Cotton tips from the pattern
Wash and dry each cloth once before using. Cotton shrinks about 5 percent and softens, and a washed cloth is much more absorbent than a new one. Avoid acrylic: it holds grease and does not drink water. If a cloth curls, block it flat while it is wet.
I like to make all three from the same color for a calm set, or from three shades that match my kitchen towels. Each cloth ends with a little hanging loop so it can live on a hook by the sink.
